Speeding is a Contributing Factor in Many Car Crashes

Columbia Car Crash Attorneys Zealously Represent Victims Injured By Speeders

Speeding continues to be a contributing factor in many car crashes. Drivers who drive in excess of the posted speed limit or who drive excessively fast for the road conditions endanger fellow motorists and pedestrians alike. If you were injured in a car crash caused by a speeding driver call The Solomon Law Group. Our attorneys have the experience and the dedication to successfully represent car crash victims injured by speeding motorists.

Speed is a factor in thousands of accidents annually in the United States. Speeding, combined with other factors, creates hazardous travel conditions for motorists. The United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHA) commissioned a study in 2010 that analyzed the effect that speed had on car crashes. That study defined speeding as 1) driving in excess of the posted speed limit or 2) driving too fast for the road conditions. Based upon that criteria, the study revealed that speed was a contributing factor in nearly 20 percent of all car crashes in the United States in 2005. Speed, however, was a contributing factor in nearly 30 percent of all fatal crashes in 2005 nationwide.

The FHA study identified numerous trends in speed-related crashes, including the demographic of the driver who is more likely to be driving in a speed-related crash. The study concluded that younger drivers (up to age 25) are more likely to be driving in a speed-related crash. Male drivers appeared in a slightly greater percentage of speed-related crashes than female drivers. Interestingly, drivers who were previously convicted of speeding were more likely to be involved in a speed-related crash. Distracted drivers, drivers who did not wear restraints and those driving without a valid license were more likely to speed. Not surprisingly, drivers who were operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs were two to four times more likely to be involved in a speed-related crash than a driver not under the influence.

Additional factors influence speed-related crashes, such as the type of vehicle, the road conditions and the speed limit. For instance, speed-related car crashes tend to occur more frequently at night than during the daytime. Also, motorcycle operators are frequently involved in speed-related crashes. Statistically, motorcyclists are two to four times more likely to be in a speed-related crash than someone driving a car. The road design at the scene of the accident also influenced speed-related crashes. The study found that speeding crashes occurred more frequently on curves rather than on “tangents” or straight lines. Overall, speed influenced more crashes on interstate highways, but the greater percentage of fatal car crashes involving speeding occurred on state or secondary roads. Additionally, crashes involving speeding occur at a higher percentage on roads with higher speed limits.
