Car Wrecks and Insurance Premiums

Written by: Reginald C. Hair

“Will my insurance premium increase even if a car wreck was not my fault?” This is a common question that we receive from a lot of our clients. The answer to this question depends on many factors. The best way to find the answer to this question is by doing the following: reviewing your insurance company’s policies and speaking to your insurance agent.

While it may seem unfair, car wrecks that are not your fault can increase your insurance premium. A 2017 study conducted by the Consumer Federation of America, revealed that Progressive was the most aggressive when penalizing innocent customers, compared to GEICO and Farmers Insurance, which occasionally increased insurance rates by 10% or more for innocent drivers. Allstate rarely increased premiums, while State Farm never increased premiums for innocent drivers.

If you contribute to a collision, you should expect for your insurance premium to increase. An at-fault collision can increase your insurance rate by 40%. Being charged with driving under the influence or leaving the scene of a collision, will increase your insurance rate by more than 75%.

Most insurance companies offer some form of accident forgiveness. Accident forgiveness is applied per policy, not per driver, and can be used only once. This forgiveness policy is largely contingent upon your loyalty to your insurance company and your driving record.

The average American pays $1,427.00 per year for insurance coverage. In South Carolina, annual premiums are approximately $1,361.00. Rates are most expensive in Allendale County and least expensive in Richland County.
