The Dangers of Summer Driving: Take Caution

Recently, a Georgetown teen died in a car accident on what would have been his graduation day. This tragedy is only one of many stories of terrible car accidents that happen over the summer months. Unfortunately, while the dangers of driving on winter icy roads are apparent, many fail to use the same level of caution in the summer months.

Summer Driving Can Be Dangerous

According to AAA, more accidents occur over the summer months—especially those involving teen drivers. During the summer months, teens are out of school and are more likely to be out on the road. In 2014, the most recent year that data is available, more accidents happened in August than any other month. While many teenagers can be safe drivers, who may lack the experience necessary to appropriately respond to dangerous or unexpected situations on the road. Because teens have had less time on the road than other drivers, they may encounter a scenario that causes them to panic or overcorrect their vehicle, leading to an accident.

Vacationing Drivers

Another reason summer driving is dangerous is because more vacationing drivers tend to be on the road. Many families choose road tripping as a form of family vacations. Due to its beaches, South Carolina is a popular summer vacation spot for many. Many of these vacationing drivers are unfamiliar with the roads and particularly long trips may cause fatigue, leaving drivers less ready to respond. Additionally, vacationing drivers may slow their vehicles abruptly to take in scenery. All of these factors can cause additional hazards that may not be present during the winter months.

Tire Blowouts and Mechanical Failures

Summer can also lead to tire blowouts. When the temperatures rise, tires can inflate or expand. When these inflated tires come into contact with hot roads or highways, it is possible that the friction between the tire and the road can cause a blowout. Tire blowouts, especially at high speeds, can cause serious personal injury or death. In addition to tire blowouts, the extreme summer heat of the south can cause engines to overheat and breakdown—not to mention the heat’s impact on drivers who do not take precaution.

Motorcycles and Bicyclists

Any person who rides a bicycle or motorcycle will tell you that riding a bike in the sunshine and summer months is far more preferable than riding a bike during the cold winter. However, these smaller vehicles can cause a problem for drivers on the roads during the summer because they are generally less visible. Many riders will also weave in and out of traffic, which can cause added dangers when driving in the summer.
