Columbia Attorney vows campaign to educate public and legislature about dangers of further budget cuts to Judiciary
Columbia, SC – At a ceremony on May 20, 2010, Columbia attorney Carl L. Solomon assumed the role of President of the South Carolina Bar (www.scbar.org) for the 2010-2011 term. Solomon succeeds Fred Suggs as President.
Solomon was sworn in at the Assembly following the House of Delegates meeting by South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Hoefer Toal. After thanking the Chief Justice, Solomon addressed members, vowing to meet current challenges with a new energy and spirit of optimism. “Chief among these challenges is the growing threat to judicial independence by ever shrinking judiciary budgets,” said Solomon. “The Chief Justice has sounded the alarm, saying that years of shortchanging the Judiciary have pushed us to the breaking point. If these trends continue, it is not beyond the imagination to expect some courthouses across this state to literally close their doors.”
Solomon told the group that legislative efforts need to be taken a step further. “In order to effectively do this, we must go beyond the state house lobby. We have to speak directly with the people of South Carolina. I think of this as “Takin’ it to the Streets” – educating the public on what is truly at stake with this level of inadequate funding.”
Solomon recently formed The Solomon Law Group (www.solomonlawsc.com). He was previously a partner in the law firm of Gergel, Nickles & Solomon, which disbanded after the nomination of Richard M. Gergel to the District Court Bench for the District of South Carolina.
