What Do Collision and Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance Coverage Cover?

As a motorcycle owner, you want to make sure you have the best policy for you. You can enjoy riding your vehicle with the knowledge that should something happen, you’ll be prepared for it. Negligent drivers cause accidents all the time. In these cases, you should be able to depend on your insurance. But if the insurance company isn’t willing to give you a settlement that you deserve, you may want to explore your legal options.

Because motorcycle accidents can be devastating, it’s important to have legal representation on your side that you can trust. We’ll do everything we can to show that you weren’t at fault and that you receive the compensation you need to recover.

While legal representation is important, it’s also vital that you know how motorcycle insurance works. Let’s take a look at some of the coverages.

Collision Coverage

This covers the damage to your vehicle—whether you’re in an accident with another vehicle or with a fixed object like a pole or tree. It’s important to note that this doesn’t cover the damage caused to the other vehicle or object involved in the crash, nor does it contribute to medical bills.

Comprehensive Coverage

There are other kinds of vehicle troubles that can occur that don’t involve collisions. Issues like theft or vandalism, or impact from falling objects like hail could cause damage. In these cases, you’d use your comprehensive coverage to take care of these costs.

However, you need to know that this doesn’t include breakdowns. Maintenance of your bike, including tire quality, is your responsibility. If you get in an accident because your motorcycle wasn’t being maintained properly, comprehensive coverage will not be used for those damages.

Both collision and comprehensive coverage can have separate deductibles. The total amount the coverage can amount to is the motorcycle’s cash value, which is also determined by depreciation.

Full Coverage

Full coverage typically means a combination of coverages for your motorcycle. A policy that has collision and comprehensive insurance as well as liability insurance is usually called full coverage. Liability insurance covers damages that other people have if you caused the accident.

While these required costs can be expensive, a new or expensive bike would take a lot of money to repair. Should an accident happen, your insurance will help you fix your motorcycle and get back on the road as quickly as possible.

Is There Anything Not Covered by Motorcycle Insurance?

Now that you know the components of collision and comprehensive motorcycle insurance, it’s also important to know what isn’t covered. The last thing you want to happen is to mistakenly think your insurance covers aspects of your vehicle but it actually doesn’t. Checking with your insurance provider to understand what your policy covers may prevent you from having to pay significantly more money should you get in an accident.

  • Commercial. You may need to get a different insurance policy if you use your motorcycle for business.
  • Competition. If you’re planning on using your bike for a competitive use, your insurance policy may not cover the damages. You can always contact your insurance provider to see if your insurance applies. If it doesn’t, you can find a solution to getting your motorcycle covered in competitions.
  • Cosmetic Damages. While your comprehensive and collision insurance will replace damaged parts, any modifications or special paint jobs that are ruined will not be covered. You’ll have to replace those on your own. It’s also important to know that custom-made parts may not be included with insurance, either.
