Are Trampoline Parks Safe?

In recent years, trampoline parks have surged in popularity as go-to destinations for family fun, birthday parties, and group outings, and South Carolina features dozens of locations for bounce enthusiasts.

These parks offer an exhilarating experience, with wall-to-wall trampolines, foam pits, and various other attractions. However, amid the excitement, safety concerns have emerged. Are trampoline parks safe environments for thrill-seekers of all ages?

A study in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) states that trampoline accidents account for nearly 100,000 emergency room visits by children every year in the USA.

The same study reports that “due to the higher tensile strength used in commercial trampolines, they may produce a harder bounce, which amplifies the loading in bones and ligaments,” making children using them “more than twice as likely to require surgery after suffering musculoskeletal and/or orthopedic injuries using a trampoline at a trampoline park than using a trampoline at home.”

Let’s look at the facts.

Understanding the Appeal

Before delving into safety concerns, it’s essential to understand why trampoline parks have become such a hit. These facilities provide a unique recreational experience, offering a blend of physical activity, social interaction, and adrenaline-pumping fun.

A 2023 article by Business Money, a financial industry journal, reports more than 1,500 trampoline parks globally (with many more being built), and a global trampoline park market valued at 837.8 million USD in 2022, which it attributes to an “increasing demand for recreational activities, especially among younger generations.”

Even for many adults, bouncing on trampolines represents a break from the monotony of traditional exercise routines, making it an attractive option for those seeking a novel way to stay active.

Safety Measures

Most trampoline park operators are keenly aware of the importance of safety. To lessen risks and ensure a secure environment, they maintain a range of safety measures and regulations to ensure the well-being of their customers.

These may include:

  • Staff Training: Proper training for employees on safety protocols, emergency procedures, and injury prevention is essential for maintaining a safe environment.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Regular inspections and maintenance checks help identify and address potential hazards before they can cause harm to visitors.
  • Participant Education: Providing clear instructions on safe jumping techniques, park rules, and proper etiquette can help minimize the risk of accidents.
  • Liability Waivers: Requiring participants to sign liability waivers before entering the park helps protect operators from legal claims in the event of an injury.

However, even with these measures in place, accidents and injuries continue to happen, leaving many customers asking: are current safety precautions enough? This was the topic forwarded by a 2019 Medicine journal study published by the National Library of Medicine.

Trampoline parks can still be held liable for personal injuries caused by negligence that happen due to negligence or not meeting regulatory and safety standards.

Risk Factors To Consider

Despite the precautions taken by trampoline park operators, inherent risks remain. Jumping on trampolines can lead to injuries ranging from minor sprains to more severe fractures and head trauma.

Factors such as improper landing techniques, collisions with other jumpers, or attempting advanced maneuvers beyond one’s skill level can increase the likelihood and severity of accidents.

Trauma surgeon Dr. Craig Cook, when interviewed for a CBS News story, said that he sees trampoline accident victims “with similar injuries to what’s seen with a high velocity (90 miles per hour) car crash that rolls.”

Several factors can contribute to trampoline park accidents, including:

  • Lack of Supervision: Insufficient staffing levels or inadequate supervision can create situations where risky behaviors go unnoticed or unaddressed, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  • Equipment Malfunctions: Failure to maintain trampolines and other equipment properly can lead to structural issues or mechanical failures, posing hazards to users.
  • Participant Behavior: Jumping recklessly, attempting advanced maneuvers beyond one’s skill level, or disregarding safety guidelines can increase the risk of injury for both the individual and others nearby.
  • Crowded Conditions: Overcrowding can exacerbate safety concerns, making it difficult for staff to monitor all areas of the park effectively and increasing the likelihood of collisions or accidents.

The Role of Supervision

Another crucial aspect of trampoline park safety is supervision. While staff members are typically present to enforce rules and offer assistance when needed, the effectiveness of supervision can vary.

Insufficient staffing levels or distractions among personnel may compromise their ability to monitor the entire facility adequately. As a result, some incidents may go unnoticed or unaddressed promptly, potentially escalating into more significant safety hazards.

Impact of Design and Maintenance

Like any type of entertainment venue, the design and maintenance of trampoline parks play a significant role in ensuring safety. Parks must adhere to industry standards for equipment design and installation to minimize risks. Regular inspections and maintenance checks are also essential to identify and address any potential hazards promptly.

Failure to uphold these standards can compromise the structural integrity of equipment, increasing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

Legal and Regulatory Considerations

From a legal standpoint, trampoline parks must comply with relevant regulations and standards governing amusement facilities. This includes adherence to building codes, safety guidelines, and liability insurance requirements.

Regulatory agencies may conduct inspections to ensure parks are operating safely and address any violations promptly.

Lawmakers also enact legislation to improve oversight and accountability within the industry.

Parental Responsibility

Parents, of course, also play a crucial role in ensuring their children’s safety at trampoline parks.

Before allowing their children to jump, parents should assess the park’s safety measures, supervision protocols, and overall reputation.

They should also educate their children about the importance of following rules, respecting others, and recognizing their physical limits while bouncing. Supervising younger children closely and intervening when necessary can help prevent accidents and injuries.

Trampoline parks offer a fun and thrilling recreational experience but they also come with inherent risks that must be addressed.

While operators implement safety measures and regulations to mitigate hazards, accidents still happen. Adequate supervision, proper maintenance, participant education, and parental oversight are all crucial factors in maintaining a safe environment for all visitors.

By understanding the potential risks and taking proactive measures to mitigate them, individuals can enjoy the excitement of trampoline parks while minimizing the chance of injury.
