Types of Car Accidents

Car accidents can occur for a variety of reasons. Government officials who investigate car crashes often assign them to one or more “type” classifications. This enables government officials to compile statistics on common types of collisions and analyze trends in the data.

For those who are involved in a car accident in South Carolina, it may initially appear that the type of car accident they were just involved in is of little importance. After all, if someone else caused the car accident, shouldn’t that be the end of the inquiry? However, the type of car accident can make a great deal of difference in determining what testimony and evidence may be available to support a claim for compensation.

Types of South Carolina Car Accidents

A car accident is typically classified according to the main cause of the crash. However, there may often be more than one factor that contributed to the crash. A car crash may also be classified according the consequences of the crash (i.e., what type of injuries were sustained or whether all involved parties remained at the scene). Common types of car accidents include:

  • Distracted Driving Accidents: Where at least one driver was engaged in some other activity while driving, such as talking on a cellphone, texting, or talking with other occupants
  • Impaired Driving Accidents: Where at least one driver’s ability to drive safely was impaired because of alcohol, drugs (whether prescribed or illegal), or some other substance
  • Truck Accidents Where at least one of the vehicles involved is a commercial vehicle or large truck (i.e., a big rig, tractor-trailer, or other large commercial vehicle). The drivers of these vehicles typically work for companies with experienced and dedicated attorneys representing their interests. Not only this, but important evidence relevant to the accident investigation (like the commercial driver’s logbooks and data from the truck’s onboard computers) can be lost if it is not promptly requested and preserved
  • Multiple-Car Accidents: When more than two cars are involved in a crash. It can be especially problematic to determine who is at fault in a multi-car accident
  • Hit-and-Run Accidents: Where one party flees the scene of the accident after a car accident has occurred. Unless there are witnesses to the accident who can describe the driver and/or car involved, it can be difficult to bring suit against the proper individual
  • Fatality Accidents: Where at least one person involved, either a driver or an occupant, died from injuries sustained in the crash either on scene or at a hospital.
