Drugged Driving Wreaks Havoc on South Carolina Roads

Accident Victims Harmed by a Drugged Driver Must Turn to Experienced Car Crash Attorneys for Help

Drivers operating under the influence of drugs cause thousands of fatal accidents annually. People driving after taking drugs suffer from the same loss of motor skills, judgment, perception and concentration as those driving under the influence of alcohol. Frequently, drivers take drugs and drink alcohol at the same time creating an even more lethal combination. Call the dedicated car crash attorneys at The Solomon Law Group today if you or someone you love were injured by a driver who was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident. The Solomon Law Group is committed to fighting for the compensation you deserve.

Driving under the influence of drugs is extremely dangerous. Although not as prevalent as driving under the influence of alcohol, statistics prove that driving under the influence of drugs is a problem on our roads. According to statistics released by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), nearly four percent (3.8%) of drivers surveyed in a 2013 study reported driving under the influence of drugs. The study revealed that younger drivers were more likely to drive under the influence of drugs, with 10 percent of 18 to 25 year olds admitting that they had done this.

The carnage on the roads caused by drivers operating under the influence of drugs is staggering. Each year 4,000 drivers who had ingested drugs were killed in a vehicle crash. The actual number of vehicle crash fatalities where one driver was under the influence of drugs is actually greater than 4,000. According to MADD, 57 percent of all drivers killed in car crashes had either alcohol or drugs in their systems, while 17 percent had both. These statistics do not even take into consideration other people killed in the accident, let alone those seriously injured in a crash involving a drugged driver. MADD cites a 2005 study that concluded more than 50 percent of all traffic crashes causing “level-1 trauma” involved drugs other than alcohol.

Drivers who operate with drugs in their system, whether the drugs are illegal narcotics, prescription drugs, or over-the-counter medications, can lose the ability to safely drive a car. Drugs can impair several skills that drivers rely on to safely operate a car, including judgment and reflexes. The effects are magnified if combined with alcohol. According to evidence compiled by MADD, driving under the influence of drugs will cause impaired judgment, meaning drugged drivers may take more chances. Drugs also impair the driver’s ability to accurately perceive the situation on the road, especially if the driver’s vision is impaired. Additionally, drugs negatively influence a driver’s attention span and ability to focus. Drugs also diminish a driver’s reaction time, causing them to respond slowly, thereby increasing the likelihood of causing a crash.
